What Cloud / Online Storage / File Hosting Service is best for my needs?

I’ve been looking online for a service to suit my needs but it seems a lot of people are confusing the terms and it’s starting to make my head spin a bit.

Basically, I’m a Photographer / Film maker and I travel a lot. So I need a service where I can:

1.Upload Large Video and Sound Files for download by my Editor, (inc. Abroad to UK).
2.Upload Large amounts of photos for download by a client.
3.Somewhere I can back up old files which I no longer want cluttering my laptops’ hard drive but if I ever need them can be downloaded easily.

I don’t really need to “Sync” any devices
And most of the time I don’t need “backup” in that what is on the server is an exact copy of what’s on my computer.

So for example I’m making a documentary across the USA and I have about 100gb free storage most times on my Macbook, but I need to send the files to my editor who has a few TB of storage but he’s in the UK. I just want somewhere I can put the files, then I can delete the one’s on my laptop, and he can download them and delete them off the “cloud” or whatever.

I’m willing to pay around £10/ /month for the service, I’d probably prefer to pay because if you pay for a service the customer support and security etc is normally better.

So considering this what is my best option?

I hope you see what I mean.

Thanks in adv.

Hi James,
I know there are many companies right now providing cloud services, which can cause confusion. While selecting look for the price offered, security measures, backup offered by them. Also take into consideration the tech support and compatibility with different OS.

Hostgator works pretty great for me, I deal with a lot of large files myself and I get an account with unlimited storage, unlimited bandwidth and unlimited domains for under 5 bucks a month. I used the coupon code ONLY1REDCENT when I checked out and got the first month for only a penny. Good deal if you ask me!

I can understand why you are concerned about using free cloud storage, but customer service is usually the same. Someone has suggested Dropbox, which is probably well suited for your needs. You can now accrue a maximum of 16GB by recommending other users. My guess is that you don’t have much time to do that, but Dropbox offers 2GB free directly after sign up and is a very reliable service.

Google are due to launch their cloud storage service (5GB free) which will be integrated into their other services, so this may be an option for you, too.

It sounds like you don’t need masses of storage as you’re solely using online storage to transfer files to your editor, so Dropbox and the new Google Drive will be perfect for you.

If you don’t need sync/backup i would say dropbox. They are one of the biggest. AFAIK the five biggest cloud storage company are

    Dropbox
    carbonite
    sugarsync
    CX
    Justcould

Out of the 5 i tried the free trail for Dropbox, carbonite and sugarsync. Out of the three dropbox give the best upload and download speed, which should be important to you since you are uploading such big fiel. Carbonite doesn’t support video unless you sign up for professional grade service
